College Equals No Job

rewari.classi4u.com

I’ve heard it one too many times from family, cousins, friends and my network that it almost sucks to be a recent college grad. Why? Because they feel that no one is willing to give you the time of the day to get the experience everyone seems to be looking for. Don’t worry, you didn’t waste your time going to school and getting a college degree. College does not equate to having no job. It actually equates to better opportunities in the future. Everyone has a tough time seeking for new opportunities and right now is the best time to figure out your career path. There is always some experience or job title or skill your missing and that’s okay. You’re not superman and you can’t do everything in a matter of 8 or 24 hours. What you can do is focus on what you want to do as you work on your career path and below are a few suggestions:

  • Obtain a job that is in the same industry as your college major or future job you would like to have (you are bound to find a job, just make sure that you pick the right one)
  • Do a good job
  • Don’t complain and try to move up fast (it never works)
  • Become an expert of your position, whether that’s administrative, sales or marketing
  • Build good relationships with your co-workers, I’m not talking about being BFF’s forever.
  • Work hard and learn as much as you can
  • Update your resume often with the new skills and responsibilities
  • Continue to educate yourself. Attend webinars, workshops, training classes that your company is offering
  • Lastly, keep a positive attitude and stay focused on your goal

It is difficult to be an adult. Bills, stress and figuring out your life is just another added challenge. However, instead of spending time complaining or dreaming about your future job, make it happen! Keep the suggestions above in mind and you’ll find your way soon enough.

Where is everybody?

csudh.edu

LinkedIn is one of the best sites to network and find job opportunities and there are more and more users signing up every day which could only mean more opportunities and connections to various industries. So, how’s your LinkedIn doing? Are you able to connect with your network and is your network able to find you? If you feel that you’re not very well-connected just yet or prospective employers are unable to find you so easily here a few things to keep in mind.

  • Do you have certain keywords in your title, specialties and skills area that allow recruiters, hiring managers find you when they do a search for sales, IT or administrative candidates?  Think SEO! You want to be found. For example, if you are in the SaaS industry and the hiring manager types in “SaaS Sales” your profile comes up!
  • Is your verbiage engaging or boring? Make sure that your bio is not so generic and look like just like your resume. Spice it up with a few more keywords!
  • Did you put a picture up? I mean a good professional photo? If you haven’t, please do it now! Now a days, no one wants to network with a shadow of a person 🙂 Everyone wants to know who they are connecting with, well at least I know I do!
  • Don’t give away too much information. Less is more especially when it comes to age discrimination. Employers don’t mean to age discriminate but it happens so why give them a reason to do so. Assuming that your resume has been updated and that you have mastered how to show off your skills/experience and education to take away the attention of how old you are, do the same with your profile.  Employers usually look at the last 10 years of employment, maybe 15.
  • Lastly, make sure your contact settings are correct and that you have not blocked everyone from connecting with you. With all the different changes that social networking sites are making without warning, some of the information you thought was private are now public and vice versa. Keep up with your data, post your contact information (email, phone etc.) and make sure that all of your info is correct and spell checked please 🙂

If you want more attention, revisit your page (s) and update your information and hopefully you can start getting some messages soon!

Breaking up is hard to do

writeawriting.com

Much like any relationship, you invest time, energy, maybe even love when it comes to your job. When that relationship starts to have problems and you can no longer talk it out or work it out, sometimes the only solution is to leave. So here’s the tough part: Is it better to just walk out or officially resign? Although either scenario is difficult, the latter is the only mature thing to do. Either way, the end result is finding another job or hoping you’re new job doesn’t end up to be like the old one. The biggest challenge is figuring why you really want to resign from your job. Like many employees that are sick of the process or management or the environment, it is much easier to just walk out and never look back. However, the world may seem huge but at one point or another, you might end up running into the same folks you used to work with and you never want to burn your bridges that badly! More often than not, organizations know there will always be movement – meaning people come and go. The end goal for most companies is to try to retain good employees and really make them priority. No matter what the organization does, you are in charge of your own organization, meaning yourself. No matter how sick you are of your work place, it’s always best to resign with class and grace 🙂

Once you’ve decided you’re ready to go, here are a few points to remember:

  • Write a formal letter of resignation, make an appointment or walk in to your supervisor’s office (if that’s the office policy) and resign with class and dignity.
  • Give 1-2 weeks’ notice. It’s not mandatory but it is certainly common courtesy. Should your company decide to walk you out that day at least you can sleep good at night knowing you weren’t just willing to abandon your job at the drop of a hat. (Even if it is tempting..lol)
  • Organize your desk, clients, business to make sure that the next person taking over is not reinventing the wheel after you leave. You wouldn’t expect anything less at your new desk.
  • Lastly, don’t be negative to everyone in the office and start spilling the real reasons that you want to leave. Meaning only the things you would tell your family. Everyone already knows you are unhappy and they don’t need to know details.

Resigning from your job with a good strategy and being prepared is the best thing for you, your sanity and the company. Breaking up is hard to do as it is, feelings will be hurt, and people will be disappointed. However, breaking up doesn’t always have to be messy 🙂

Interview Question of The Week: “What color is your brain?”

funderstanding.com

As you’re sitting in your chair, dressed to impress, confidence is oozing out of all the answers during your interview. Then comes the twister “What color is your brain?” at this point, you’re probably thinking “Huh?” Why the heck would you ask me that? and now all you want to do is figure out how to run out of this interview as fast as you can..lol

Don’t be discouraged or even fazed by this question, many interviewers come up with wacky questions such as this because they want to stump you and find out what makes you tick. Think about it, you prepare for the “normal” interview questions such as, Where do you see yourself in five years?, What are you strengths, blah blah blah. Same questions different interviewer. However, when you do get these wacky questions your answer is neither right nor wrong rather the interviewer is trying to see how creative you are and how fast you think on your feet.

Here a few good answers to shout out 🙂

“My brain is green because I’m always thinking about the next big deal”

“My brain is yellow because I am happy confident and like to think positive”

“My brain is red because I am always on fire with how to generate more business”

It’s okay to throw a little humor in there too 🙂 It’s good to show your fun side as well because after all the company is not trying to hire a robot. Stay professional, think positive and get creative!

Keeping up with the times

gps-tracking-systems.net

Many more organizations are using modern technology to conduct business, especially recruiting firms. We speak to many candidates, clients and review hundreds of resumes a day. Can you imagine how long it would take if we had to print, write or even remember all of these people without the aid of a CRM technology? As much as we would like to give ourselves credit for fabulous memory, it just isn’t humanly possible to remember every single person and remember every single conversation you have ever had. It would take FOREVER, and we are glad that someone out there thought about creating an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) or CRM to help us remember and keep track of you 🙂

These modern tools have been invaluable and we live by them. However, to make them completely successful and work efficiently, we need your help too. As an applicant you usually have to go through a couple of steps to apply for a position if you are doing it on-line which most of us do. Click on the link to get redirected to a website if you are not on the actual website already, then you have to complete a form or sign up to create a profile.

The Ladders.com Lisa Vaas wrote an article called The 24 Step Modern Resume. Resume Checklist: Follow these best practices to ensure your resume gets through the spam filter, applicant tracking system, and to the recruiters and hiring managers. The Ladders.com spoke to ATS Vendors to create this list to help candidates to make sure their resume is up to date and can get through the technology that is being used successfully.

You have to keep up with the times and technology especially with your job search, as easy as it may seem to apply for a job online because everything is at your finger tips, you still have to make sure it reaches its destination with little to no problem. Just like Lisa said, you don’t want to end up in a black hole with all 30 of your resumes just floating there 😉

Monica’s 3 tips that might actually help your job search

mmfeliu.blogspot.com

Happy Friday! I hope your week went well and you recovered okay with having Monday off. It’s always tough to get back to work or your job search when you had a 3 day weekend.

Today is a special day because we have some great tips from an actual hiring manager about what not say during an interview, how to format your resume and how to present yourself during an interview. These tips are invaluable folks and some maybe brutally honest but I think we all need that every now and then. So without further a due, below are Monica’s 3 tips to help you get that job.

“As someone who has made plenty of hire/don’t hire decisions, here are three tips that actually might help:

1. Do your resume right. Have friends or a professional help you. Hiring managers and recruiters will look at a dozen or more resumes for each person they talk to. They are looking for a reason to throw away each resume: bad formatting, confusing structures, spelling and grammar errors.

2. It isn’t about why you want or deserve a job. It is about the problem the hiring manager has that only you can solve. If it isn’t about that, you won’t get hired.

3. No matter what, never say anything negative about anyone. Drop that whole bit about how no one at your last job appreciated how awesome you are, and how management were all idiots, and how at this point the world owes you. You sound like a psycho.

Bonus tip: gaps in employment are death. Volunteer or work for free somewhere, but don’t make it look like you’ve been doing nothing for the last year or two.”

Monica…

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and hope you found our tips helpful today because I sure did!

Interview Question Of The Week: “Why Should We Hire You?”

This week our interview question is “We’re considering two other candidates for this position, Why should we hire you rather than someone else?”

Tough question and it can certainly catch you off guard. You know you are not the only one applying for the position and you don’t know how many people are really in the running, however interviewers want to make the best choice and they want to know why you should be that choice.

Don’t get distracted by the other candidates, you don’t know anything about them and you don’t know if there actually 2 other candidates they are considering. There could be 0 or 10. Instead, focus on your strengths, your skills, your training and education and your experience that you bring to the table. Much like in sales, there is always competition and you have to show why you have the best product and why they should use your services. Get ready for your 60 second commercial about yourself and don’t forget to re-iterate that you want the job and that you will enjoy working for their organization.
